From "is this place any good?" to ordering, paying and declaring allergies — eating in China is highly digitised, and highly social.
Stop worrying about the missing Yelp. Dianping is where locals actually rate places — and it's enough.
Ratings, real photos, average spend per person and queue times — plus deal vouchers you can buy in-app. Locals' reviews beat influencer lists every time.
Same company as Dianping, so the data is shared. Buy set-meal vouchers, order delivery, book hotels and tickets. Vouchers often run 20–40% below ordering à la carte.
Alibaba's delivery app. Pick it or Meituan — coverage differs slightly by city, so use whichever delivers faster where you're staying.
China's lifestyle community: search "city + food" for a flood of local recommendations. Great for discovery, but sponsored posts are common — cross-check the score on Dianping before you go.
The standard way to order in China: sit down → scan the QR code on the table → order and pay inside a mini-program. No waiter involved.
Usually on the table corner, the standee or the menu, labelled 扫码点餐 ("scan to order"). Your table number is printed nearby.
Either works — check which the sticker shows. You'll land in the restaurant's mini-program, a small app you don't have to install.
It usually detects your table automatically — double-check, or your food goes to the wrong table.
Menus show photos, prices, monthly sales and a chilli rating. Look for the "signature" or "must-order" tags — they rarely disappoint.
Pay with WeChat Pay or Alipay inside the mini-program. Some places support "eat now, pay later" — you scan again when you leave.
You may get a number paddle. Water, cutlery and tissues are usually self-service — and note that tissues and wet wipes are often chargeable.
Whether it arrives is 90% about the address. Chinese addresses run large to small: city → district → road → number → building or complex → block and unit → room.
There is no single "Chinese food". The differences are enormous — know which school you're eating before you order.
Famous for málà — numbing plus hot. Not every dish is spicy. Numbing comes from Sichuan pepper, heat from chilli; together they're the soul of the cuisine.
Built on ingredient quality and precise heat: delicate, clean, fresh. Home of dim sum, and arguably the safest cuisine for cautious eaters.
On the sweet side, seasonal and refined. Rich braises and lighter local dishes sit side by side.
Savoury, generous portions, serious staples. Wheat dishes and stews take centre stage.
A noodle kingdom built on beef, lamb and spices, with bold flavours. The most fascinating branch of Silk Road cooking.
When someone pours your tea, tap two fingers on the table as thanks (said to date back to a Qing-dynasty tale). Hold your glass slightly below theirs when toasting. Declining alcohol with a simple "我不喝酒" is perfectly acceptable.
Never stand chopsticks upright in rice (it echoes a funeral rite), don't drum your bowl, and don't serve others with your own chopsticks — use the communal pair if there is one.
China's official receipt is the fapiao, used for expense claims. Travellers rarely need one, but if you do, ask for it at checkout and give a company name or phone number.
Tipping isn't customary. Some restaurants add a per-seat, tissue or service charge — these are printed on the bill and entirely normal.
The three that matter most: no chilli, peanut allergy, vegetarian. Restaurants are generally accommodating — just say it.
Restaurants with touts at scenic-area gates are usually overpriced and mediocre. At seafood places without prices, ask before ordering. Food inside stations and airports carries a big premium — walk a block.
